This article details our policy on adding characters. If you are going to add a new character to the archetype lists, then make sure to follow the guidelines listed below. The guidelines may be modified with time, so make sure to follow the page to be notified about any changes made.
- Before adding a character: Make sure that the character is not added already to either the Japanese or non-Japanese list. If you want to find a character use the in-editor search function to look for it. The basic format for adding a character is listed below, but for more specific can be found at the bottom of the page.
*'''''Media Name -''''' [http://www.example.com Character Name]
Allowed Characters Policy
- Only fictional characters are allowed on these lists. We do not accept real-life people on the lists.
- Vtubers (or Virtual YouTubers) who have a character as their avatar will be allowed on the lists if the personality trait is part of their fictional lore and the character they play. They should not be added based on their real-life personality as a streamer.
- You are not allowed to add your OCs to example lists, but feel free to share them on your user page, in the discussions, or your blog posts!
- Try not to add more than 15 characters from the same media. If you see the list is too long, try to generalize it a bit. For example, adding "Several characters", "All idols", or the name of a group instead of listing all of the individual members.
Character Removal Policy
As with all subjective things, there are going to be disagreements. If you see a character on a list who you feel doesn't fit, then are allowed to remove them. However, if you are going to remove a character, you should write a reasonable motive for such action in the summary first (such as "this character never tried to be dishonest with their feelings" when removing a character from the "tsundere" list).
- If a character is removed without a clear reason the edit will likely be reverted for safety as it can appear to be vandalism, as well as to avoid edit wars between users that added said character.
- If you remove a character from a list you must then also make sure you go through and remove all images/quotes from the character from the other archetype subpages.
- Sometimes there can be conflicts when adding or removing characters as each person has a different idea on topics like these. Keep in mind that the lists are subjective and that there will always be characters that represent one archetype better than other characters listed. Don't feel bad if someone removes your character or re-adds one you deleted. If you think a character should or shouldn't be on a list, talk it over calmly with the other user to come to an agreement or try to better explain why you feel they don't fit.
Name Policy
Japanese Media
For Japanese media, we use the official Japanese stylized titles (how the title is styled on the Japanese manga/anime/game cover) as opposed to using Romanized names or English dub names. For example, we use My Hero Academia because that is how the title is styled on the Japanese manga cover instead of Boku no Hiiro Akademia. Series that do not have any special stylized titles should use the direct Romanized name, however.
Non-Japanese Media
For non-Japanese media, you should always use the official English title, even if the native language of the source is not English. If the series does not have an official English name then please do not make one up or try translating it, and instead just add the name in its native language.
Alphabetical Order
All new series and characters must be added in alphabetical order.
- In this wiki we use the "letter by letter" method, which means that things such as spaces, symbols, punctuation, and any other stylization are ignored during alphabetization (i.e, "【Oshi no Ko】" would be alphabetized as if it were simply "Oshi no Ko" instead).
- Numbers go always first than letters during the alphabetical order, and every number is seen individually. If some media begins with "11a", another begins with "1a", and another begins with "101a", the order will be; 101a - 11a - 1a.
Explicit Names
Please avoid adding series or characters with explicit language in their names unless necessary. Doing so just adds an unnecessary barrier of entry for those who want to add characters but may not want to see this kind of language.
A good rule of thumb is if the main page for an archetype already has a {{warning}} for strong language or suggestive themes, then it's probably fine to add it to that archetype's character list. For example, adding a series with a suggestive title to "erodere", where this kind of language is not only expected but is unavoidable, is fine, but adding something like that to "deredere" is not and the entry will be removed. Try to keep the lists as user-friendly and open as possible.
Links Policy
Adding links for character entries is required so users are able to easily find additional information about the character. If a character is added without a link then the edit will be reverted. The reason for this is because the lists are designed to help users learn more about a particular archetype, so including a link can let users see more about how that character behaves.
- Links should only be added for the characters, not for the media.
- These links should lead to either the most correct and informative wiki about that media (even if not Fandom related), or to another database entry for that character (such as MyAnimeList or Visual Novel Database).
- You should only resort to official websites or multimedia wiki if a wiki about the source and/or article about the character doesn't exist yet anywhere.
- If no link can be found to be added for a character, then that character likely is not notable enough to be added as an example so they should not be added.
- Regarding songs, if there is a wiki page for the song (such as the VOCALOID wiki which has pages for all VOCALOID songs with lyrics, information, artwork, links to official videos, etc) then a link to that wiki should be added, but if not then add a direct link to the official music video can be added instead. Please do not add links to unofficial reuploads of music videos, only the official source.
- Don't change the links to [[w:c:futurediary:Yuno Gasai|Yuno Gasai]]. The reason we write them as full URLs instead is because the way we add the links will lead the visitor to another browser tab when clicking on them, while this one will change the current tab the user is browsing forcing them to return back to our wiki. In a character list, we must keep in mind that the visitor would want to see different articles about characters at the same time without leaving the current character list they are in.
Category Policy
In addition to "Japanese characters" and "non-Japanese characters", character lists are broken down into 4 category headers so make sure to add characters to the correct corresponding category.
- Anime, Manga, & Light Novels: This section is for all professionally published anime, manga, & light novels (things that can be found on database sites like MyAnimeList). This is not for fanmade doujins or web comics. However, it does include streaming media that are serialized by professional companies, such as Japanese web manga released on digital manga apps (such as web-exclusive Shounen Jump series).
- Cartoon, Comics, and Graphic Novels: This section is for all professionally published cartoon, comics, & graphic novels. This is not for YouTube web series or web comics.
- Video Games & Visual Novels: This section is for all original published video games & visual novels. This is not for fangames or web flash games.
- Live-Action & Novels: This section is for all professionally published live-action series/movies & novels. This is not for YouTube web series or web novels.
- Other Sources: This section is for all miscellaneous categories not covered by the other three. This includes things such as songs, audio dramas, webcomics (for example Webtoons, self-published doujins, etc), web series (such as series posted to YouTube or other social media), and other web media. This also includes non-original works that are based on pre-existing media, such as fangames (including fangames created inside of other games, such as Minecraft or Roblox worlds), game mods, parody series, and other fanworks.
Official Character Policy
If a character has been officially labeled as an archetype by its series or creator, you can mark it as such by adding the character using the {{Official}} template and providing a source showing where the archetype was mentioned. The source should be in the form of a URL linking to exactly where the term was used in connection to the character. Users shouldn't have to go digging to find the reference!
- Q: So what exactly counts as "official" in this context?
- A: The source must come from someone who owns the rights to the series and has the authority to make such a statement regarding the character, it does not count if just other people who did not create the series call them this (for example, a CBR article "top 10 tsundere characters") but the original creators did not. This can be in the series title itself, in an episode title, in the description of the series on the official website, a character about section, licensed merchandise, a direct quote from the author or actor who is playing the character, another character in the series referring to them as that type, etc. This can be a link to the official website, an online retailer, a credible news site, a streaming platform, a social media post by the creator, etc. If the term is only used inside the media itself, then you may upload an image showing a screenshot of it being used and link directly to that image file on our wiki. If you do this make sure you provide enough context so that people who are not familiar with the series can still tell who they're referring to (such as by stitching together several concurrent scenes: for example).
- Q: Can I use a wiki as a source?
- A: A non-direct source (such as another wiki or anime database site) may only be used if the source is the series or character name itself, since the source is merely a formality at that point (i.e, a series called "My Girlfriend Sara is a Tsundere" could simply just link to the "My Girlfriend Sara is a Tsundere Wiki" since the source is the series title itself and the link just proves the series is real), however, an official source is still preferred so try to link to the official site instead. If none are available then a non-official source is acceptable. If a non-official source is used for any other reason, such as hearsay, it will simply be removed to maintain reliability since anyone can simply edit these pages and say the creator called them that type regardless of whether they did or not.
- Q: But I disagree!!!
- A: It doesn't matter, it's their character. Users should never remove official characters unless they were added mistakenly and are not actually official. It is fine to disagree with the subjective opinions of other users and remove unofficial characters, but you cannot disagree with the creator of the character. If they say they designed their character to be tsundere then they're tsundere.
Love Interest Policy
- This policy only applies to dere types unless otherwise specified at the top of the character page inside the {{Edit}} template
If a character is an example of a romantic version of a particular archetype, you can add a heart that mentions their love interest by adding {{Heart|<Love Interest>}} beside their name in the character list. This is used to distinguish characters that are romantic examples from those that are platonic ones.
- Love interests should only be added if the characters acts this particular archetype towards their love interest. So for example, if a character acts "deredere" with their love interest, but "tsundere" only with their friend, then their love interest should only be added on the "deredere" page and not "tsundere" because they are not a romantic example of a "tsundere".
- A love interest should only be added if the relationship is official (both end up together or have feelings for each other during the story), semi-official (only the dere character gains feelings for the love interest but these feelings aren't reciprocated during the story), revealed by one of the creators, or at least highly implied in the source they come from.
- Don't add a love interest if the love interest has feelings for the dere character but the dere character doesn't have feelings back. Only add love interests when the dere character themself has a crush on or falls in love with, not the other way around.
- Do not add your headcanons and favorite ships if they're not canonical.
- In the same sense, don't remove these hearts and love interests if they follow all the rules above just because you don't like an official pairing.
Platonic Policy
- This policy applies only to dere types
While dere types are a genre used in romance media, we have decided to allow users to add platonic examples. However, characters that are not romantic examples of a dere type must be marked as such by adding either (platonic) or (familial) in place of the heart. They also still must have the listed "dere" traits and still need to follow the same formula and character development as romantic characters even if it's platonic love or familial love as opposed to romantic love. If a character is entirely loveless or only shows traits from the "non-dere" side then they should not be added.
So, what exactly does this mean?
- Q: Does mean I can add ANY character who fits the first half of the archetype?
- A: No. Even if it's platonic it still needs to follow the same character development (i.e , tsuntsun → deredere) and have something resembling a cute, doting, and lovey-dovey "deredere side", even if it isn't specifically lovestruck. Consider adding evil or selfish characters to the gire lists instead, or perhaps add them to the number of other archetypes that don't require a sweet affectionate side. Although we have decided to allow platonic examples, these are still romantic archetypes and we don't want that to get overshadowed.
- Q: What does platonic mean in this context?
- A: To figure out a platonic meaning just replace "love interest" with "friend" or "family" and "lovestruck" (dere) with "amae" (see entry for more details). Deredere is described as the action of being amae towards someone you are attracted to, so the platonic version of that would simply be being amae towards someone you're not! Remember that while "dere" implies romantic feelings, "amae" itself can also be the relationship between a mother and child. So consider whether your character has that closeness and feelings of intimacy with their friends or family.
For example:
- A platonic "tsundere" would be someone who acts standoffish to hide the fact that they want to be friends with someone (I-it's not like I want to be your friend, dummy), but will be very loving after they learn to be honest with those feelings. Versus someone who goes off for any reason at all that is unrelated to hiding loving feelings, romantic or otherwise.
- A platonic "utsudere" would be someone who is normally sad, but becomes cheerful and affectionate around their friend. Versus someone who is only ever depressed with no "dere traits".
- A platonic "roshidere" would be someone who uses Russian to hide the fact that they're complimenting their friend. Versus just anyone who happens to speak Russian regardless of personality, and so on.
In all three examples the "deredere side" is still represented and the overall formula and character development is the exact same, just in a slightly different way.
What is acceptable
- Adding characters who are sweet, affectionate, and doting with their friends or family.
- Adding characters who act amae towards their friends or family.
- Adding characters who experience character development from unfriendly, to loving and affectionate to their friends or family.
Let's take for example the character of Raphiel Ainsworth Shiraha from Gabriel DropOut. She is not in love with Satania, but she does have traits of both "S" and "Dere" so she is allowed on the "S Dere" list as a platonic example. While she like to toy with Satania (S), she only does so because they have a special bond and slowly throughout the series she stops messing with her. By the time the series ends, they're very good friends and they are completely loving and sweet with each other (Dere). i.e Raphiel had a character development from "S" to "Dere", she is "S Dere".
Basically, if they're acting all lovey-dovey with their friends like this then they're allowed!
What is not acceptable
- Adding characters who only have traits of the initial side with no character development.
- Adding deranged villains with no dere side.
- Adding characters who were just nice one time.
Let's take for example the character of Light Yagami from Death Note. He has a massive god complex so that makes him a kamidere, right? After all, he wants to be worshipped? No. While he undeniably has the "Kami" traits, the "Dere" traits not so much. He's extremely selfish, deranged, and doesn't care what happens to his pretend girlfriend Misa. So he is not any type of "dere" because does not behave in a deredere manner at any point in the story.
Another example is Bakugo from My Hero Academia. If one were to give him a "dere type" he might be considered a "thugdere". After all he acts very much like a "thug" when he bullies Deku, and by the end of the series he comes to respect him, so that does that make Bakugo a dere? Again, no. While it is true that Bakugo has some character development, he never becomes "amae" towards Deku. He respects him sure, but he's never lovey-dovey (deredere) with him so he doesn't belong on the "dere" lists either. He's more like a reformed ijimekko.
Remember that it's okay if a character you like can't be added! Not every character will be cutesy and lovey-dovey, but we have plenty of non-romantic archetypes for you to add characters to! If they don't fit a dere type, they might fit a different archetype. A real-life poll actually showed that only around 40% of Japanese men in relationships even act deredere towards their significant other!
Format Guidelines
All characters and media added must follow the format listed below, this includes a URL linking to the characters wiki profile being mandatory. If a new entry doesn't follow the correct format it might be removed even if the characters fit the archetype. However, please note that there is room for error for new users and mods will help you fix any formatting mistakes at first, but don't try to take advantage of our good will. Don't put the work on us to have to go searching for a character we're likely not even familiar with! If you keep making the same mistakes over and over even after getting help then your edits will likely just get reverted.

You may also add small notes about the character entry after their name, such as who their love interest is, if they're a platonic example, if they're formerly that type, if they have alternate aname, if they only are this archetype in a specific route or ending, etc. If a character has multiple notes, they can be separated with a semi-colon.

Songs
Songs should be added together in one section titled "Songs" and all songs should be listed in alphabetical order with the name of the artist added next to the title inside parenthesis. For the character entry, if the character does not have a given name then you can simply put "Protagonist" instead, or something descriptive like "Blonde Girl". Since all songs must be listed together under one larger section the format is slightly different. However, keep in mind that the format is simply the same as adding a regular character, but with a one extra bullet point at the beginning to have them all grouped under a single songs header.
