"Deretsun" (JP) is a term for a character who is normally deredere towards their love interest but gradually adopts a more standoffish and dishonest tsun attitude over time. At the start of the relationship they are very affectionate, overly friendly, and openly loving to their love interest like a normal deredere character, but a certain trigger causes them to act tsun towards them instead. This happens because they sometimes become overwhelmed by their love interest which causes them to turn away from them. They may also act this way if someone points out their overly lovey-dovey behavior with their love interest causing them to become embarrassed and start acting dishonest and denying their feelings.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Deretsun (デレツン) is a combination of "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck", and "tsuntsun" (ツンツン), a mimetic word for "turning away (to turn one's back on someone, to ignore someone, or to refuse to accept)" which describes an attitude that is "aloof (distant), standoffish (somewhat cold), and stuck-up (high-and-mighty)".[3][4][5]
Origin
The first instance of "deretsun" can be found in episode 10 of the 2007 anime series Lucky☆Star (JP) during the "Lucky Channel" segment at the end of the episode. In the segment, the character Kagami Hiiragi is introduced as a "tsundere" by Akira Kogami to which another character Minoru Shiraishi retorts that she isn't, prompting the question "then what term is she?". After thinking for a bit, Minoru questionably suggests "deretsun" as a possible term to describe Kagami.[2]
Localization
In the English subtitled version of episode 10 of Lucky☆Star (JP) by FUNimation, the term was officially romanized as "dere-tsun".[6]
History
The term was used in the 2016 light novel series Would You Like To Sign a Lovers Contract? -The Deretsun Young Lady and Me the Company Slave- (JP).[7][1][8][9]
Personality
Dere Side
Deretsun are the exact opposite of tsundere. Unlike a standard tsundere, they do not hide their feelings for their love interest initially since they are deredere from the start. They will be overly affectionate with their love interest and actively try to win their heart, just like a deredere character would.
They will behave in cute ways and show their amae side where they constantly to be affectionate with their love interest.
Tsun Side
However, while at the start of the relationship they are affectionate, overly friendly, and openly loving to their love interest like a deredere, over time a certain trigger causes them to occasionally adopt a more standoffish tsun attitude towards them instead.[10][11]
The main reason for this is because they often become embarrassed by their feelings towards their love interest and don't know how to handle it so they lash out and act dishonest, just like a standard tsundere would. For example, a deretsun might get their love interest a gift for Valentine's Day, but when someone points out that they're being deredere they become embarrassed and deny it. Or they might transfer into a class at school they don't really want to take just so they can be close to their love interest, but then get embarrassed when their love interest finds out and make up a bad excuse to try to justify it.
They might also simply become overwhelmed by their love interest sometimes which causes them to get upset and give their love interest the cold treatment and pretend like they don't have feelings for them anymore. Whatever the case is, they will eventually become deredere again and go back to being affectionate and loving after they make up with their love interest.
Difference From Other Archetypes
A common misconception regarding the deretsun archetype is that it is for characters who are normally very kind and affectionate in general, such as to their friends or classmates, but then act tsun with their love interest. However, this is not the case as both the standard tsundere type as well as the deretsun type only act tsun towards their love interest. A regular tsundere will get along and be cheerful, affectionate, and loving with their friends, but act defiant towards their love interest because they are dishonest and want to deny that they have feelings for them. They do not act this way towards others because they do not have feelings for them so there is nothing to deny. In comparison a deretsun also acts openly affectionate with their love interest from the start, but later starts acting tsun towards them.
