I hate boys. They bully me and try to make me cry, but I won't!
Komachi, from Ijimerarekko

"Ijimerarekko" (JP) is a term for a character who gets bullied often.

A character who bullies others is referred to as ijimekko.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Ijimerarekko (いじめられっ子) is a combination of "ijimerare" (いじめられ), meaning "bullied", and "ko" (子), meaning "child". The term is used to refer to someone who is often the subject of bullying from others. It mainly refers to school aged children and is rarely used for adults.[3][1][4]

Alternate Spelling

When the archetype is used to refer to a female character it is sometimes spelled as "いじめられっ娘", using the kanji "ko" (娘), meaning "daughter (or a young unmarried girl)", in place of the kanji for "child".[2][5]

As someone who is the victim of bullying, ijimerarekko characters are typically very timid and flinch easy. They can often be seen crying or covered in bruises and bandages. Because of this they will often be scared to go to school or have a lot of social anxiety around people.

Characters with hetare (pathetic) or nakimushi (crybaby) personalities are commonly victims of bullying. Even if an ijimerarekko character didn't have these personality types before getting bullied, they will often develop them after the fact.

The ijimerarekko character may develop some form of phycological trauma as a form of a defense mechanism to deal with the constant bullying. For example, they may unable to recognize the faces of people who have bullied them in an effort to minimize their effect.
