History
Official Media
In anime and manga series, cigarettes are often used to enhance certain characters by giving them a distinct look to make them seem cool or mysterious.[2]
Censorship In Anime

Sanji in the Japanese dub vs the American dub of One Piece
Due to the nature of this archetype it is often subject to a lot of heavy censorship to remove drug-related references. In Japan, anime involving scenes depicting minors (under 20 years old) smoking cigarettes is heavily regulated. As such, when these scenes are animated from their manga counterparts the age of the character is either raised to 20, or if that isn't possible (such as due to the character being in high school) this aspect is cut from the character altogether.[1]
For example, in the ONE PIECE manga the character of Sanji is 19 years old in his debut, however, due to his prolific smoking his age was raised to 20 years old in the anime. Another example is the character of Hayato Gokudera from Hitman Reborn who smoked cigarettes in the manga, but due to being 14 years old and still in high school was changed to use cigarettes in the anime adaptation.[1]
In American dubs of anime, cigarettes are infamously sometimes changed into lollipops to avoid exposing cigarettes to children, as with the case of Sanji. In other cases, they are just edited out altogether.[3][4]
Personality
These types of characters can almost always be seen smoking with a cigarette in their mouth.
Due to their obsession with tobacco, it is possible that they also have lung problems, and consequently they can be seen coughing at times and in the middle of a sentence.

In anime, smoking scenes involving minors began to be regulated around 2000, partly due to changes in social conditions, and if a character smokes in the original work, the age is raised in the anime to make it legal, the smoking is blurred, or it is cut or replaced with a different scene in the first place. This is sometimes done with adult characters as well, making alterations.”

In many cases, anime series use cigarettes that match the image of the character's role and personality, and the cigarettes appear as important props to enhance the character. Some anime series also feature fictitious brand names while alluding to real cigarettes. However, there tend to be few examples of officially published brands of cigarettes smoked by anime characters. By matching a specific brand of cigarettes to an anime character, it can be said that the badassiness, isolation, and coolness of the character are more effectively portrayed. In this article, we will explore the mysteries of the brands of cigarettes smoked by anime characters who are "the character you think of when you think of cigarettes".”

SK Anime (2023/06/29). “While this censorship choice may seem harmless enough, it certainly changes later in Sanji moments in the story. The most significant of these would be Skypeia when Sanji takes a lightning bolt from Enel and says he was about to ask for a light. The Whole Cake Island arc would’ve also been affected greatly, as the scene where Sanji cries wouldn’t have been as impactful without the cigarette moment.”

CBR (2024/05/20). “Keeping in mind that 4Kids wanted to target One Piece toward young kids, it's reasonable that they didn't want one of the main heroes of the story, Sanji, constantly smoking cigarettes. However, simply replacing his trademark cigarettes with lollipops was one of the silliest choices they could have made to resolve this issue. In the cases of other characters who smoked, such as Smoker and Crocodile, their cigars were completely edited out; this may have also been a more ideal solution for Sanji.”
