Fight you? No. I wanna kill you.
Son Gohan, from Dragon Ball Z

"Majigire" (JP) is a term for a character who becomes seriously angry when they are pushed to their limits. They will hold their anger inside until they can no longer take it and suddenly explode and go berserk with rage.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Majigire (マジギレ) comes from the word "majide" (マジデ), meaning "seriously", and "kireru" (キレる), meaning "to get angry or lose one's temper". It can be said that these characters have "seriously snapped".[1][2][3]

History

Media

The most famous example of this archetype is the character of Son Goku from the 1985 manga series Dragon Ball. Ever since he was a kid he was extremely carefree and would laugh at even the most dangerous circumstances, never taking anything too seriously. This was until the Namek Saga when Frieza, one of the absolute worst villains he'd faced, murdered his best friend in front of him and then went on to threaten his son, Gohan. This caused Goku to completely lose it, bursting out in anger and transforming into a Super Saiyan for the first time. This trait would also be found in his son, Gohan. Unlike his father who enjoyed martial arts as a sport, Gohan did not have a liking to violence or fighting. He was shy and preferred studying to become a scholar. However, when he became angry he would become a completely different person. He was no longer interested in simply fighting to save the world, he wanted to make them suffer.

Another popular series that used this archetype was Mob Psycho 100. Mob was an extremely shy and reserved kid who did his best not to stand out or get attention. Throughout the show, a counter can be seen; every time something occurred that inconvenienced Mob the counter would increase. When the counter reached 100% he would lose control of his psychic powers and completely snap. All of his pent-up emotions pour out at once causing him to become extremely ruthless and violent.

Personality

Majigire characters will snap and get extremely angry and violent when they are pushed to their limits. Unlike a buchigire character who will snap over the smallest inconvenience, a majigire character will let their anger build up. They will simply brush off these feelings of anger, holding everything inside until they reach their limit and go berserk with rage. Majigire characters are a ticking time bomb.

When they reach their breaking point they will lose all sense of control and lash out in anger, running purely off instinct and rage. They will become extremely violent and behave in ways that they normally wouldn't. Most majigire characters will still have enough self-awareness to only harm the people who angered them, but some may unintentionally harm those they care about if they've been pushed beyond the point of rational thinking.

Differences From Other Archetypes

Despite having both a polite innocent side and an angry violent side, they differ from yangire characters in that yangire characters are pretending to be sweet to hide their psychotic side, whereas majigire characters are simply normal people who have been pushed too far.
