I just wanna get stronger, that's all.
Son Goku, from Dragon Ball Super

"Sentou Kyou" (JP) is a term for a character who likes to fight more than anything else. They are extraordinarily dependent on combat and get thrills from fighting strong opponents in hopes of honing their skills in battle. They can usually be seen smiling during fights because of how much they enjoy them.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Sentou Kyou (戦闘狂) is a combination of "sentou" (戦闘), meaning "battle, fight, combat", and "kyou" (狂), meaning "wild enthusiast (being crazy about something)".[5][6]

Localization

The term "sentou kyou" has been localized in many ways, all with the same general meaning.

In 2017, Crunchyroll translated the term in the English subtitled version of episode 113 of Dragon Ball Super as "battle-crazy".[2] When that same episode was dubbed into English by FUNimation in 2019 it was localized as "fighting freak" instead.[3] The Japanese version of the Black Summoner light novels translated the term as "berserker" in 2016, however, it was localized as "battle junkie" for the English release in 2024.[4]

History

Official Media

The archetype is the most associated with the Saiyan characters from Dragon Ball. Saiyans have an inborn need to fight and most Saiyans will spend their entire lives training to become stronger so that they can prove themselves in battle. Even a pure-hearted Saiyan like Goku has let evil villains live just so he could have the chance to fight them again in the future and challenge himself to get even stronger so he can stop them next time. Saiyans like Goku and Vegeta are frequently seen training and improving their fighting skills to keep up with each other's skills and push each other to get even stronger.

It was later used in the 2016 light novel series Black Summoner (JP), subtitled in Japanese as "Sentou Kyou no Nariagari" (JP) or "The Berserker Rises to Greatness". The story follows Kelvin Celsius who is reincarnated into another world as an S-Rank summoner where he quickly discovers that he is a battle junkie and aims to become the strongest in the world.[1]

Personality

Sentou kyou are characters who like to fight more than anything else. They are extraordinarily dependent on combat and get thrills from fighting strong opponents, often to the point of smiling mid-fight. They will actively seek out strong opponents in hopes of honing their skills in battle. They aim to become the strongest in the world and to do so they will train constantly.

Sentou kyou are usually highly skilled martial artists, whether it's hand-to-hand combat, sword fighting, or magic.

Differences From Other Archetypes

Unlike many "gire types", just because sentou kyou characters love to fight doesn't mean they will harm innocent people. They have no evil or malice; they just want to fight. They will usually enter martial arts competitions where everyone agrees to fight or seek out villains/monsters to fight. They also generally only enjoy fighting strong opponents because it's the only way they will be challenged to improve, so they are not the kind of people who will go around just harming random people.
