What's the most precious thing in this world? The answer is obvious. My little sister!
Lance Crown, from Mashle

"Siscon" (JP), also known as "Sister Complex" (JP), is a term for a character who has an excessive attachment or obsession with their sister. This can be in the form of a strong dependency, a strong adoration, or in extreme cases even a romantic love that goes beyond sisterly love.

It is the counterpart to brocon.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Siscon (シスコン) is a combination of "sister" (シスター), and "complex" (コンプレックス), meaning "repressed desires that exert a dominating influence upon someone's personality". It is an abbreviation of the term "sister complex" (シスターコンプレックス) and refers to people with an excessive attachment to their sister.[2]

Origin

The first use of the term "sister complex" was in Hiroyuki Itsuki's novel Koiuta (JP) in 1967.[citation needed]

Alternate Spelling

It is sometimes also spelled as "しすこん" using hiragana, but this is less common since English loan words are almost always written in katakana.[1]

Characteristics

Siscon are characters who have an excessive attachment or obsession with their sister. This is very often in the form of a romantic attraction, but it is not inherently always an incestuous obsession and can still be platonic.

Some siscon may have developed a dependency on their sister, having comfort when they are around and feeling they cannot live without them when they are not. This is often the case for older sisters who have taken a more motherly approach in their lives. Others may simply have an abnormal amount of pride in their sister and want to do anything they can for them, as is often the case for little sisters.

Siscon characters are typically male, but plenty of female characters fall under this archetype as well.

Sub-Types

There are broadly two types of siscon, however, it is not uncommon for characters to have traits of both; being both a fanboy/fangirl "and" romantically attracted to their sister.

Platonic

Platonic siscon characters will often have mega deredere personalities, being fanboys/fangirls for their sister. They will dedicate a lot of time to spoiling their (typically little) sister and devote themselves to her existence and happiness. They will constantly be praising them and telling other people about how great their sister is whenever they get the chance. They carry around pictures of their sister, telling everybody about how cute they are or how proud they are of them, and might even have a shrine dedicated to them. Such characters will go out of their way to get any amount of affection from their sister that they can, often to the great annoyance of their sister.

Siscon characters will get extremely upset about the thought of their sister marrying someone, even if the obsession is purely platonic. Because of this, a lot of siscon characters will also display traits of being yandere, threatening anyone who makes romantic advances to their sister.

Romantic

Romantic siscon characters who have incestuous feelings for their sister, however, will often have the complete opposite personality. These kinds of siscon will usually just admit their feelings from afar or try to push them deep down and convince themselves that they don't have them, keeping their romantic attraction a secret because of their guilt. This is in contrast to most romantic brocon characters who will typically flirt with and try to enter a relationship with their brother.

Romantic siscon characters may read sister-based novels or play incest eroge in secret.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Siscon ~Sister Spirit~. Getchu (2002/09/20). “The main character, Naoki Tachibana, loves his younger sister Miyuki beyond his control. However, they are blood subling. He cannot step into the forbidden garden... So he turns to Ayumi Amakawa, a very popular idol girl who looks just like his sister and now he is in a state of infatuation. One day, while he was enjoying his peaceful life, he receives an air mail from his father. At first glance, it appears to be an ordinary letter. However, the content of the letter was worth shocking the protagonist. Naoki and Miyuki are not related by blood. Naoki lives with the other's daughter, Ayumi Amakawa. Thus, a domestic war between the two sisters-in-law was about to begin, with Naoki's love and ulterior motives tingling in the air.”
  2. What is Siscon. Pixiv Encyclopedia (2010/06/04). “Siscon is short for sister complex and refers to a strong attachment or obsession with an older or younger sister. It does not matter whether the person harboring the attachment is male or female. The term "sister complex" is not defined as a psychological term. Perhaps because of this there are various types of siscons: including those who simply have lots of sisterly love, those who are extremely devoted to their sister, those who are overprotective and over-involved, and those who have a sexual love that goes beyond familial love. From the outside, it is generally understood that the love between siblings has gone too far.”
