"Tsungire" (JP) is a term for a character who is quick to get angry and push others away when they try to be affectionate with them. While a tsundere pushes people away by acting standoffish or ignoring them, a tsungire pushes them away in an angry and ruthlessly direct way.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Tsungire (ツンギレ) comes from the words "tsuntsun" (ツンツン), an onomatopoeia for "turning away (to turn one's back on someone, to ignore someone, or to refuse to accept)", and "kireru" (キレる), meaning "to get angry or lose one's temper".[1][2] It refers to a state of refusal or rejection toward someone in a way that is ruthlessly direct.

It's not just someone who gets angry, but someone who gets angry because someone is trying to be affectionate with them. If you get mad because someone is being deredere to you, you can say you're tsungire.[1] The best example to describe the behavior of tsungire is a moody cat who is difficult to approach and threatens, rejects, or even claws the owner when they try to pet it.[2]

Origin

Tsungire Neko no Nora-san

Nora going from neutral, to loving, to angry, to loving from Tsungire Neko no Nora-san

While the exact origin of the term is currently unknown, its use can be traced back to at least 2008 on Japanese forums and 2010 on Japanese wikis.[3][1]

The first known use of the term in an official media series of the 2016 yuri romance manga series Tsungire Neko no Nora-san (JP) by Neji, where it was used to describe the titular character Nora. Nora was a catgirl who lived with a girl named Sae and the story follows their daily life and developing romance. Much like a real cat, Nora was often cold towards Sae and tended to claw or bite Sae when she tried to become intimate, but she also had a more affectionate and loving deredere side.[4]

Tsungire are characters who become angry and hostile when other people try to become affectionate with them. They have a similar personality to a typical tsundere when it comes to trying to push people away for getting close to them, but they act with angry or violent tendencies as opposed to simply being standoffish and stuck-up. These aggressive outbursts can range from simple verbal abuse to outright physical assault.[2]

While a tsundere acts cold and distant to keep people from noticing their soft side, a tsungire will act aggressively to achieve the same end. They are usually just too embarrassed to admit they desire some sort of intimacy.

Development

There are also those that are mixed with tsundere, and it is very common for the more extreme tsundere characters to also have tsungire moments, resorting to punching their love interest rather than simply looking away and acting stuck-up towards them. These kinds of characters go through a development pattern of tsun (ツン) → gire (ギレ) → dere (デレ).[1]

When taking a look at the following three characters we can see that some characters exhibit only tsundere traits (standoffish to hide feelings), some characters only exhibit tsungire traits (aggressive to hide feelings), and some characters exhibit both tsundere and tsundere traits.

Differences From Other Archetypes

The main difference between this archetype and any other derivative of kireru is the reason for getting angry. A tsungire character acts tsuntsun and becomes angry because they're embarrassed that people are trying to be deredere towards them. In comparison, types like buchigire can be angry for literally any reason and they don't necessarily have to act tsuntsun or try to push others away.

  • Buchigire: A term for a character who quickly becomes furiously angry.
  • Gandere: A term for a tsundere character who hides their feelings of love towards their love interest by shooting guns at them when they get embarrassed, but overtime grows to become loving and deredere as they learn to be honest with their feelings.
  • Gundere: A term for a tsundere character who is unable to express their feelings of affection to their love interest subordinate so they turn into a drill sergeant and berate them for not being good enough.
  • Tsundere: A term for a character who has loving deredere feelings for their love interest but is unable to be honest with them so they end up acting distant, standoffish, and stuck-up to conceal them.

It may seem similar to tsundere, but its nature is slightly different. There are also some that are mixed with tsundere and others that are close to it. It's not just someone who gets angry, but someone who gets angry because someone is trying to be affectionate with them. If you get mad because someone is being deredere to you, you can say you're tsungire. Basically, it is based on the fact that the person is always strong-willed or stubborn and rejects others. In short, "tsungire" is... If we were to name an easy-to-understand real-life model, the moody "cat" that is difficult to approach, threatening, rejecting, or cat-punching when its owner comes near it would be the most representative example of a model that is most likely to be sympathetic and convincing to all people.”

It's difficult to find the right balance with a selfish character, but if a character is not just angry, but is angry because someone is being deredere to them, then they can be said to be tsungire. Also, "cats" are sometimes used as an easy-to-understand example of tsungire because they are difficult to approach and always on edge.”
