"Yurijoshi" (JP), also sometimes known as "Himejoshi" (JP), is a term for a female otaku character who enjoys fictional works that depict love and intimate relationships between women.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Yurijoshi (百合女子) is a combination of "yuri" (百合), an otaku slang term for "a genre involving lesbian relationships in light novels, manga, anime, video games and other Japanese media", and "joshi", (女子), meaning "girl/woman". In standard Japanese, the term "yuri" refers to "lillies (flowers)" and is not generally used to refer to real-life lesbian relationships, but within the otaku fandom it is widely used to refer to such relationships. The genre is also widely known as "girl's love" or "GL".[3][4][1]

Origin

The term originated from the 2011 yuri philosophical manga series Yuri Danshi (JP) published in the yuri magazine Comic Yuri-hime (JP), where the term "yurijoshi" was used to refer to female fans of yuri. It then later started to also be used in articles published in Comic Yuri-hime.[4]

Alternative Name

This is also sometimes referred to as himejoshi (姫女子). The term "hime" (姫) comes from Comic Yuri-hime (JP), a manga magazine specializing in yuri. Because of the magazine's strong association with yuri media and because of a misunderstanding of the term, fans of the magazine started being referred to as "himejoshi" (yuri-hime girls) and it slowly became a term to refer to fans of yuri media in general.[5][6]

The term "yuri otaku" (百合オタク), or "yuriota" (百合オタ) for short, is also commonly used.[2][4]

Yurijoshi are female characters who enjoy fictional works featuring intimate romantic relationships between women, typically known as either "girl's love" or "yuri".[3]

They are usually a fanatic about yuri and can talk for hours about their favorite yuri series.[3] In some cases, they may feel shy about their hobby and try to hide it from others, but when someone shares their hobby they become passionate about it.

Sexuality

It is important to note that this term does not refer to female characters who themselves are lesbian and enjoy being deredere with other female characters themself and it is considered a misuse to use it as such. Instead the term refers only to those who enjoy watching female×female relationships as a third party.[3][4]

Although in many cases this does translate to their real life attraction with them also being into women themselves, but there are also many yurijoshi who simply enjoy it as a fictional medium separate from their real life and are romantically attracted to men.[3] However, even yurijoshi who are not lesbian themselves often have yuri feelings towards female character or fantasize about being caught between two yuri girls. Though even if they have yuri dreams about fictional female characters, many of them still completely distinguish between the real world and the two-dimensional world.[4]

Yurijoshi will often enjoy seeing yuri situations happen in real life or fantasize about seeing different yuri ships. Generally the mindset of a yurijoshi is that they only want to observe and don't want to participate. Even if they do want to participate, they may be too shy to admit this fact and act like they only enjoy it in fantasy.[2]

To put it in the words of Hanadera Keisuke, the protagonist of the yuri philosophical manga Yuri Danshi, it is a woman who loves yuri, lives for yuri, and dies for yuri... but there is no problem in calling people who also like male-female couples or light yuri fans who are also fujoshi by the term. Incidentally, this term is used to refer to women who love female-female pairings, and it is a misnomer to refer to women who just like to look at "cute girls" on their own (i.e, Tomoyo Daidouji from Cardcaptor Sakura) as "yurijoshi".”

Yurijoshi are women who love yuri, live for yuri, and die for yuri, in the style of Hanadera Keisuke, the main character in the yuri philosophy manga "Yuri Danshi". (It can be simply "a woman who loves yuri"). When the gender of the yuri lover is not specified, the terms "yuri lover" (百合好き), "yuri otaku" (百合オタク), and "yuri fan" (百合ファン) are common. However, in the work "Yuri Danshi" by manga artist Uso Kurata, which were serialized in Ichijinsha's yuri manga magazine Comic Yuri-hime, there are terms for men who like GL and "yurijoshi" for women, and these terms are sometimes used in articles in Comic Yuri-hime. Yurijoshi are simply "women who love the yuri relationships between women", and it is a misuse of the term to mean "women who love a specific woman alone." Also, yurijoshi does not mean lesbians or bisexuals, and have nothing to do with the person's actual love interests. Also, regardless of whether they are straight, bisexual, or lesbian, it is not uncommon for people with the nature of yurijoshi to have strong yuri or yuruyuri feelings towards certain female characters, or to have the desire to be caught between yuri couples, like the so-called "woman caught between yuri". However, even if they have yuri dreams about fictional female characters, many of them still completely distinguish between the real world and the two-dimensional world. Also, there is "himejoshi", which started as a misunderstanding and spread as the misunderstanding became the name (the "hime" in "himejoshi" seems to come from "Comic Yuri-hime").”

The term is said to come from Comic Yuri Hime, a magazine specializing in yuri.”
