Meaning[]

The meaning for this dere was not entirely correct before. The use of the word "lazy" as one of the main traits was misleading and led to a lot of characters who don't fit being added. Darudere actually doesn't have anything at all to do with being lazy. The word "daru" is just the Japanese pronunication of the word English "dull", meaning boring or lacking interest and excitement. This dere is basically for boring characters who live a mundane life and complain whenever their love interest wants them to go do something fun, but do it anyway.

  • For example, Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya is the source of Darudere. Kyon isn't lazy at all, he would just rather do something "exciting" like his homework than go do something elaborate with Haruhi. He would complain, but do would end up doing it anyways because he liked her.

So this is another type that needs to be split because there are currently two types of people in this list: dull ones and lazy ones. Some characters do fall under both like Shikamaru from Naruto who is both lazy and dull, but just looking through the gallery there's a lot of people who seem pretty excited about being lazy so they don't have a dull personality.

We could create an unofficial type for lazy people to move them to. The Japanese word for lazy is Taida (たいだ), so Taidere (たいデレ) would work.

The revelation of this other meaning is a bit troublesome, because darudere is quite popular with the "lazy" meaning. The unofficial alternative you mentioned is pretty good! But I think we should also consider that we can create a "Western" namespace like what we did with dorodere and such, due to the popularity of the lazy darudere. Even so, if the lazy meaning is not completely removed fron the wiki, no matter how this is moved in the end, I'll be okay with it!

Yeah it's an interesting situation. I did a bit of searching on the English side of things and I'm finding some English articles with the dull definition and some with the lazy one, so it seems a bit mixed. Though most of the new ones do seem to lean towards lazy. Personally I would prefer to not make too many Western versions since it gets a bit confusing having so many with the same name, but I'm not against it.

Although thinking more about it, maybe having a completely new one for lazy would be better so we could also include characters who ENJOY being lazy or just want to laze around after work? I feel if we made a Western Darudere we would also have to include the stuff about being dull (since before it said lazy and dull). I'm thinking someone like Umaru-chan who is smiling while being lazy and playing games.

I'll think more on it later.
