You were not showing any signs of awakening, so I was beginning to worry. B-But that's only because I'm royalty. I must always have an open heart for those who serve me. |
"Tsunpuri" (JP) is a term for a female tsundere character who is a princess and acts dishonest with her feelings in a dignified and ladylike manner. Although they are very elegant and polite to everyone, as is expected of someone of royal status, they are dishonest with their feelings and will pretend like they aren't in love with their love interest. They will often hide their feelings under the guise of their royal duty, such as saying they have to care about all of their subjects and they aren't doing nice things for their love interest specifically. However, over time they will start to be more honest with their feelings and show a more openly cute and loving deredere side after confessing that they are in love.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Tsunpuri (ツンプリ) is a combination of "tsundere (ツンデレ), meaning " a character who can't be honest with their feelings of love towards their love interest so they act distant and standoffish to conceal them", and "purinsesu" (プリンセス), a katakanization of "princess".
Origin
It comes from the 2009 erotic light novel series Tsunpuri: Aishite Ohime-sama (JP) to describe the titular tsundere princess, Reiana.
The story follows Princess Reiana and her romance with the knight Lowe who saved her from an attack. Although she fell in love with him after he saved her, she struggled with admitting her true feelings. She even spent all day taking care of him while he was unconcious because he got hurt while saving her. Her maid Diana knows about her feelings and tries to help her be more honest by revealing this fact to her love interest, though of course she denied it by claiming that it was simply her duty to care for her citizens and that she didn't do it because she was in love with him specifically. However, after the initial period of denial she quickly corrects herself and tells Lowe that it wasn't what she meant to say. She thanked him for saving her life before offering him her love and affection.[1][2]
Alternate Romanization
It is also sometimes unofficially romanized as tsunpri in the Western community.[3]
Characteristics
Tsunpuri are female characters who are royal princesses and oversea a kingdom.
Personality
Tsunpuri are princesses who act dishonest with their feelings (tsun) in a dignified and ladylike manner (puri), but eventually are honest with their feelings and become deredere.
Tsun Period
His daughter, Princess Reina, may seem indifferent to your presence, but she is actually very glad to have you in her service as well. |
Although they are very elegant and polite with perfect ladylike manners to everyone else, as is expected of someone of royal status, they are dishonest with their feelings and will pretend like they aren't in love with their love interest. Whenever they are around their love interest they will act indifferent to them to pretend like they don't have feelings for them. However, at the same time, if their love interest would ever get hurt and fall unconscious they will tirelessly spend all day and night nursing them back to health.
They will often hide their feelings under the guise of their royal duty. If they accidentally tell their love interest they were worried about them, they'll quickly clarify "I-it's not like I care about 'you' specifically I-I just have to care about 'all' my citizens which just so happens to include you. It's my duty as a princess that's why I was up all night worrying about you and taking care of you."
Additionally, since they are a princess they will behave with ladylike manners and dignity as is expected of someone with their status as royalty even while being "tsun". It is not in their nature to hurl insults or belittle their love interest, so they rely more on turning their heads away to act disinterested, making pouty faces, or coming up with excuses about how they're only doing caring things because it's their duty and not because they want to. Therefore their "tsun" moments are relatively calm and quiet, in comparsion to the often more high strung tsun moments or name calling seen in other tsundere types.
Dere Period
Please continue protecting me from now on. You are my one and only Knight. |
While they struggle with admitting their true feelings at first, they will soon learn to be honest with their love interest. They may find themselves acting this way towards their love interest unintentionally due to their embarrassment, but then catch themselves and start their confession over again and tell them honestly that they are in love with them. From this point onward they will show a more openly loving and affectionate deredere side. Although they normally have a strict diginified exterior, after they have confessed to their love interest they will start to open up while around them and let their guard down. They will start behaving in cute ways and showing them a far more intimate and vulnerable side that they don't show to others.
Similar Japanese Archetypes
- Himedere: A term for a female character of noble status who starts out wanting their love interest to constantly give them lots of attention and to spoil them, but eventually starts fawning over them as well and doing nice things to make them also feel taken care of. This type is similar, but instead of being a princess who hides her feelings they are an entitled noble lady who wants constant attention.
- Oujodere: A female character who has a strict dignified exterior and behaves with perfect ladylike manners like a true princess in public but turns cute and affectionate when alone with their love interest. Tsunpuri could be seen as a combination of this type and tsundere, where they act "tsun" in an "oujo-like" (princess-like) dignified manner.
- Tsundere: A character who can't be honest with their feelings of love towards their love interest so they act distant, standoffish, and stuck-up to conceal them. Tsunpuri is a variation of this type.
