I'm an unwanted child living off of things that are also unwanted. I'm used to being alone... |
"Borodere" is a term for a character of good heart who lives in ragged conditions. They face many difficulties in their everyday life that makes it difficult for them to fully commit to being with their love interest, but they eventually become deredere for them.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Borodere is a combination of "boroboro" (ボロボロ), meaning "worn-out, tattered, crumbling", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck".
Characteristics
Borodere characters are usually unfortunate souls who end up poor at some point, living on the street or poorly treated by others. That is why they can be seen wearing old, shabby and torn clothes, sometimes even showing signs of being unhealthy and ill.
There are several reasons why they can end up like this. They may have already been born in a poor place or lost their parents at some point on their life. They can find themselves with bad and abusive guardians or even become stuck in a toxic relationship.
Many of them are even homeless, which is why they are often forced to steal or work very hard to earn food or shelter. They are neglected by society so it's hard for them to find food or maintain good hygiene, being ignored and looked down on by people of higher status. However, with time they will also learn how to survive and adapt to this environments which will not only help them in their everyday life but will also allow them to use their new found knowledge and abilities to protect their loved ones when necessary.
Personality
Due to the difficulties they face trying to live a normal life many would never consider entering a relationship with anyone or even a friendship. They will be more concerned about their own problems and survival than being with other people. Their love interest will have to help the borodere find their place and make the borodere see that they are worthy of living a better life with someone by their side, without constant fear.
If the love interest is also a borodere, it's possible that at least one of them doesn't want to get close with the other, thinking that it's already difficult enough trying to survive on their own. Whether this actually happens or not, both borodere will finally help each other in their survival, facing the difficulties that face them together.
If instead the love interest is of a higher status than the borodere, they will not want to approach their love interest in fear of the problems that this could bring to the love interest. They may also think that their love interest sees them as being of lower status. Even if they want to, they would never imagine and believe their love interest would reciprocate their feelings, or that if the love interest does they would be unable to provide a normal life to them.
