I'm scared. Of everyone. I need to learn to deal with people better.
Crona Gorgon, from Soul Eater

"Fuandere" is a term for a character who is normally very anxious, but hides their anxiety and becomes deredere when around their love interest.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Fuandere (不安デレ) is a combination of "fuan" (不安), meaning "anxiety", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck and overly affectionate".

Fuan also means: uneasiness, insecurity and suspense.

Personality

Fuan Side

Fuandere characters are extremely anxious, but will often hide it around their love interest. A fuandere character acts calm and relaxed around their love interest, but are anxious on the inside.

When their love interest isn’t around, their anxiety is more obvious. Fuandere characters often have social anxiety and feel anxious in social settings, but around their love interest, they’ll try to hide their anxiety.

Dere Side

Eventually, as a fuandere character spends more time with their love interest, they will gradually start to overcome their anxiety.

They will feel less anxious, even in social situations. And they will begin to make more friends and become more comfortable in social situations.

As a fuandere eventually starts to overcome their anxiety, they will start to develop a more loving and affectionate '"deredere side around their love interest.

Differences From Other Archetypes

Fuandere can be seen as very similar to hajidere, which is for characters who are very shy. The main difference is that a hajidere character can be seen blushing while a fuandere character can be seen panicking. Although, both types can be shy and timid when talking to their love interest, the way this shyness shows on their face is difference. A fuandere character hides their anxiety around their love interest, while a hajidere character often blushes from embarrassment around their love interest.
