Unofficial Work Ahead! |
"Hikadere" is a term for a character who has deredere feelings for their love interest, but is very pessimistic and insecure about their love interest liking them back or their chances of getting into a relationship with them. Although they are madly in love with their love interest, their insecurities often prevent them from confessing their true feelings. However, eventually they will fall in love to the point that they are able to work up the courage to confess that they are in love.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Hikadere (ヒカデレ) is a combination of "hikan" (ひかん), meaning "pessimism or disappointment", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck and overly affectionate".

Hikadere characters feel insecure about themselves and their chances at love as well. They see themselves as inferior to others so they will often apologize for anything they do, even more to their love interest. Due to their pessimistic personality, they do not think they have a chance at being in a relationship. Even though want to be with their love interest they will hold themselves back. They will not see themselves as having any shot at being with them so they won't confess so they won't get rejected.
They are very insecure and wonder if they really should be in a relationship with their love interest, thinking that they aren't good enough for their love interest to like them back.
Some hikadere characters might not seem pessimistic until they believe they do something wrong. They'll act normal, for the most part, but when they make a mistake, they'll say self deprecating things, like "Sorry about that, that was my fault it was stupid of me to even ask you on a date of course you wouldn't want to be with someone like me." They may even feel like they've had a negative impact on their love interest's life and that they must regret ever meeting them. In some cases, this may cause them to try to pull away from their love interest until their love interest ensures them that they've never once regretted meeting them.

However, despite their insecurities and pessimism, more than anything else they are in love with their love interest and want to make them happier than anyone else. They will do things to make their love interest feel loved, even if they deny that their feelings are romantic and say they are just doing it as a friend.
Eventually they will fall in love to the point that they don't care if they get rejected, they have to confess their feelings. They will work up the courage to confess to their love interest they they have fallen in love and will do everything in their power to make them feel taken care of.
Differences From Other Archetypes
It is somewhat similar to fuandere but more focused on pessimism in a relationship as opposed to general social anxiety.
Characters who are this type are also often shy and blushing hajidere characters as well.
