I strive to be a true gentleman! There are times when a gentleman has to be courageous and fight, even when his opponent is bigger than he is and he knows he's going to lose! |
"Jendere" is a term for a male character who is sweet, kind, gentlemanly, and becomes deredere around their love interest. Some may even act like a true prince.
This is the male counterpart of oujodere.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Jendere (ジェンデレ) comes from the words "jentoruman" (ジェントルマン), meaning "gentleman (a chivalrous, courteous, or honorable man)", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck".
Personality
Jentoruman Side
Jendere characters can be seen as the perfect gentleman. They are chivalrous, polite, respectful, and honorable. They have distinguished manners and act with maturity and poise. They can be strict when it comes to others behaviors, but are never outright mean about it.
They will always try to help others whenever they need it.
Deredere Side
However, despite their gentlemanly nature they also have a less dignified deredere side where they let their strict manners down and show a less serious and more relaxed side to their love interest. They will do things that they might have previously thought are undignified like being lovey-dovey with their love interest or showering them with compliments.
Differences From Other Archetypes
They don't demand to be treated like a prince like an oujidere would, they just behave like one, and others react to their genuine gentlemanly manner. They often attract the attention of other characters, mostly women, who fall in love with their kind and delicate actions and words. Not all of them are actual princes, but just have that gentlemanly personality.
