Content Spoilers: "Kanojo, Okarishimasu"

Rest assured, I'll help you while I'm your "girlfriend".
Chizuru Ichinose, from Kanojo, Okarishimasu

"Nisedere" is a term for a character who pretends to be in a relationship with someone at first, but eventually falls in love with them and becomes deredere for real. While they are in public they will act like they are deredere for each other, even though it is all just an imitation. They will do things like holding hands and going on pretend dates to keep the deception up while in public. However, through the process of pretending they will realize that they've spent so much time together and gone on so many "pretend dates" that somewhere along the line their feelings stopped being pretend, that this "fake love" is actually "real love". After this point they will no longer need to pretend and can just be in a normal relationship going forward after they confess that their feelings have become real.

Etymology

Meaning of the Term

Nisedere (偽デレ) comes from "nise" (偽), meaning "false, immitation or pseudo", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck and overly affectionate".

History

Although this dere type is unofficial, it is a very popular trope. The most popular example, as well as the namesake for this type, is the 2011 romance manga series Nisekoi: False Love (JP). The story follows Raku Ichijo, who is the son of a notorious Yakuza leader, and Chitoge Kirisaki, the daughter of a boss in a rival Yakuza group, who are forced by their parents to be in a pretend relationship so their organizations can form a truce.

Another very popular series that uses this type is the 2017 romance manga series Rent-a-Girlfriend (JP). The story follows Kazuya who after getting into a slump after being dumped by his ex girlfriend decides to "rent" a girlfriend. After a series of events, Kazuya and his rental girlfriend Chizuru Ichinose both end up accidentally telling their grandmothers that they are dating. Not only that but Kazuya's grandmother even gives her old wedding ring to Chizuru. Since both of their grandmothers are so happy their grandchildren have finally found someone, they decide to continue pretending for their sakes. However, throughout their rental dates they both slowly start to develop real feelings for each other and spend more and more time together even outside of the rental service. They both at different points in time think about telling their grandparents that they simply broke up, but end up hesitating because they don't want it to end.

Personality

Nisedere are characters who pretend to be in a relationship at first (nise), but eventually fall in love for real (dere).

Nisedere are characters who pretend to be in a relationship with someone, even though the relationship is purely an imitation. While they may not act this way while they are alone together, whenever they are out in public they will pretend to by a happy loving deredere couple who are super into each other to maintain this deception. They will hold hands and go on pretend dates. They may even fake a kiss with each other by putting something in front of their faces to act like they're just too shy to do it in public.

Their reason for pretending could be any number of different reasons, such as:

  • Because they were forced into the relationship (such as by their parents for political reasons).
  • Because they got caught up in a lie and have to continue pretending so they don't disappoint people who think it is real.
  • Because it is mutually beneficial for both people involved (such as getting benefits only afforded to people in a relationship, like safety).
  • Because they want to get back at an ex to seem like they've moved on.
  • Because they want to hide their feelings for someone else.

Often they will feel conflicted about this decision and be regretful about deceiving others. They may want to come clean about this lie, or even to get out of it in the event they were forced.

What a coincidence. Because the 'real' you is my dream girl!
Kazuya Kinoshita to Chizuru Ichinose, from Kanojo, Okarishimasu

However, at some point this "imitation love" ends up becoming "real love" and the two people actually end up falling in love with each other.

Through the process of pretending, they realize that they've spent so much time together and gone on so many "pretend dates" that somewhere along the line their feelings became real, that this is no longer just "pretend" for them. After mustering up the courage to confess that their feelings have become real they can just be in a normal relationship going forward.
