Etymology
Meaning of the Term
Toukadere (糖菓デレ) comes from the word "tou" (糖), meaning "sugar", "ka" (菓), meaning "confectionary", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck and overly affectionate". Altogether the word "touka" refers to "sweets, desserts and candies".
History
Although not an official dere type, the concept of gourmet romance series is very popular in Japan. One of the most notable being the 2015 romance light novel series Sweet Reincarnation (JP). The series followed the character Pastry Morteln in his dream of creating a paradise of sweets. Pastry was a chef with a passion for all things sweet and would regularly create new sweets for his friends and family to try. After becoming engaged to his fiance Licorice, he moved all of his attention to making sweets for her. He would make sweets for her any chance he got to show her how much he loved her or to cheer her up when she was feeling sad. Licorice would also enjoy just watching him make sweets because she loved seeing the passion on his face while he was cooking.
Characteristics
Toukadere characters are often chefs and enjoy making sweets from scratch for their love interest.
