"Kanedere" is a term for a character who is only attracted to their love interest if they have money, status, or any other resource that will benefit them. After some time with their love interest they will realize that money is not the most important thing and they will begin to appreciate them for who they really are.
Etymology
Meaning of the Term
This word is a compound of "kane" (金), meaning "gold", and "deredere" (デレデレ), a mimetic word for "being lovestruck".
Origin
The term originated in the Western community to describe characters who are gold diggers. Use of this term dates back to at least 2013.[1][2][3]
Personality
Kane Period
Kanedere are characters who are only attracted to their love interest if they have money, status, or any other resource that will benefit them. They are the equivalent of a gold digger: a person who forms a relationship with another purely to extract money from them.
Kanedere will use other people for money. They will only show "interest" in people if they have earned a lot wealth and status. They will use their looks and charms to flirt with people who they think they can use for their benefit. Because of this they are generally considered very manipulative people, or sometimes even thiefs.
Kanedere will often ignore or treat someone with loathing until they find out that this person can be a source of profit and they can get something out of them.
Deredere Period
While at first a kanedere will only care about how much money a person has and nothing else, if they meet someone they truly love their money-chasing habit can be broken. After enough time with their love interest they will begin to realize that money is not the most important thing and they will start to appreciate them for who they really are. They will develop into a "pure love", or "an innocent love without any ulterior motives or selfish desires, often associated with a sense of sincerity, selflessness, and purity in love" , and fall in love with them regardless of their wealth or status. Even if their love interest suddenly became poor, they would continue staying with them regardless and supporting them through the hard times.
Differences From Other Archetypes
Kanedere is sometimes confused with bocchandere—characters of high status who are spoiled and think they are better than everyone else—but the difference is bocchandere are characters that have a lot of wealth and power while kanedere are characters who want a lot of wealth and power. Bocchandere characters could be considered the ideal love interest for a kanedere.
